The Morris Historical Society will renovate an 1860’s two-story addition of the Museum building, which will include 1) new gallery space, 2) new storage space, and 3) an accessible entrance. This renovation will be done in two phases. MHS is seeking funding from NY Forward for Phase I.

Scope of Project

Phase 1 of this project will create a building shell, or base build, for the 1860’s addition. It will begin by tearing down three sides of the 1860’s addition, leaving only the historic commercial front intact. Then the two-story addition will be rebuilt behind the commercial front using the same footprint as the original, to include a new foundation, framing for a 1st-floor display gallery, framing for a 2nd-floor collections storage space, exterior walls, roof, and an accessible entrance near the adjacent parking lot. The project will follow decarbonization guidelines by removal and/or replacement of 50% or more of the area of interior wall-covering material of the building’s thermal envelope. Drainage systems at the roof and ground level will be included. Principle Design Engineering of Norwich will be providing design drawings for Phase I.

During Phase II, interior finishes, insulation, and electrical and mechanical systems will be installed. Phase II will also follow decarbonization guidelines and will follow design drawings from Principle Design Engineering of Norwich.

Benefit to the community

The project will expand the exhibit and meeting space, where the community will be able to gather to hear the stories and see the artifacts of its past. This new space will foster a sense of belonging through activities, traditions, and a shared narrative. As exhibit space is increased, so will community involvement through expanded tours, educational programs, and volunteer opportunities for the public and school groups.
